Tuition

Tuition is set individually by each higher-education institution and varies strongly by field and programme; both EU/EEA and non-EU students are usually charged a fee unless they hold a state-funded place or a scholarship such as Stipendium Hungaricum. Typical self-funded fees at public universities in general academic fields (business, engineering, sciences) range from about EUR 3,700-4,500/year for EU/EEA students to EUR 4,400-10,800/year for non-EU students. English-taught Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy programmes cost considerably more - Semmelweis University, for example, charges EUR 22,000/year for its General Medicine programme. Visa

Residence permit for the purpose of studies (entry is usually on a national D visa, followed by a residence permit issued after arrival in Hungary) — 30 hours per week during term time (plus up to 90 days per year full-time during study breaks). ^{[7] [8] [9]}

Applications

Self-funded (non-scholarship) applications are generally accepted from around November for the smaller February intake, and from around February until the end of May for the main intake starting in September; exact deadlines are set by each university. Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship applications for a given academic year open around November and close by 15 January (2 p.m. CET) of the following year, with results announced by early July. ^{[10] [11]}

Language

Magyar. Hungarian is the language of instruction at most institutions, but international students can choose from several hundred English-taught programmes at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, especially in medicine, business, engineering and IT; Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) alone lists more than 100 degree programmes taught fully in English for international students. ^{[12] [1]}

Health insurance

Students from EU/EEA countries can generally use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medically necessary care in Hungary. Third-country nationals must prove they have valid health insurance (or sufficient funds to cover healthcare costs) to obtain or renew a residence permit for study purposes; Hungarian immigration authorities will not issue or extend a permit without it. Scholarships

• Stipendium Hungaricum — Hungarian government scholarship programme for international students, open to citizens of countries with a bilateral education cooperation agreement with Hungary. It covers full tuition fees, a monthly stipend (about HUF 43,700 for Bachelor's/Master's/non-degree studies, HUF 140,000 for the first four semesters of a PhD and HUF 180,000 from the fifth semester), either a free dormitory place or a HUF 40,000/month housing contribution, and health insurance under Hungarian legislation plus supplementary medical cover of up to HUF 65,000/year. ^{[18] [11] [19]}
